Abstract
Problem Statement/Background (GAP): The decline in the use of Malay language in Pekanbaru City has become a serious problem that threatens local cultural identity. The dominance of Indonesian and Minangkabau languages, as well as the lack of interest among the younger generation in Malay, has accelerated the marginalisation of the language. This phenomenon shows the weakness of intergenerational language inheritance as an important cultural heritage. Purpose: This study aims to comprehensively analyse the role of the Malay Customary Institution(LAM) of Riau in preserving the Malay language in Pekanbaru City. Method The method used in this thesis is qualitative research with a descriptive approach based on analysis using Biddle & Thomas's role theory. Fifteen informants were involved in this study. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research instrument was the author himself. Result: The findings show that the role of the Malay Customary Institution(LAM) of Riau in preserving the Malay language in Pekanbaru City was analysed through the dimensions of Biddle & Thomas' role theory. In the dimension of expectations, four main categories emerged, namely language preservation through curriculum integration and socialisation, government support in the form of regulations and budgets, improved coordination within the LAM, and the provision of supporting facilities and resources. In the norms dimension, it was found that the LAM has carried out its duties and functions in accordance with applicable regulations, both based on internal budgets and regional regulations approved by the government. In the performance dimension, it was found that the level of behavioural participation in the roles carried out is quite good but still faces challenges; however, the LAM is committed to conducting evaluations of adaptive and community-oriented management approaches. In terms of evaluation and sanctions, it is known that the LAM's programmes have received positive and negative responses, which are used as evaluation material, and that a democratic and consensus-based approach is important in cultural preservation, with the aim that all elements of society feel valued in the process. Conclusion: The Malay Customary Institution (LAM) of Riau plays an active role in preserving the Malay language through educational and socio-cultural activities, as well as collaboration with the government and educational institutions.
