Abstract

Problem Statement/Background (GAP): (Contains the background behind the research). The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected various aspects of life, especially in terms of the economy. Therefore, in an effort to improve the welfare of the community during the Covid-19 pandemic in Kulon Progo Regency, the Regional Government through the Kulon Progo Regency Agriculture and Food Service empowers coastal communities through chili farming. Objective: to determine the role of the Kulon Progo Regency Agriculture and Food Service in empowering coastal communities through chili farming during the Covid-19 pandemic to improve community welfare. Methode: This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods with an inductive approach, where the authors obtain data by means of interviews, observation and documentation Result: The results of this study indicate that there is community empowerment in coastal areas through chili farming carried out by the Agriculture and Food Service of Kulon Progo Regency during the Covid-19 pandemic to improve community welfare.Conclusion: The Kulon Progo Regency Agriculture and Food Service has made efforts to empower coastal communities through chili farming to improve the economy during the Covid-19 pandemic quite well.Obstacles in empowering coastal communities through chili farming are: lack of public awareness of chili farmers to process chili agricultural products, lack of agricultural extension workers, chili farming in the coastal area of Kulon Progo partially uses Pakualaman soil, and chili plant pests. Efforts were made to overcome the obstacles in the form of conducting socialization and increasing the activities of the Gempar Program (Gerakan Menanam Tanaman di Pekarangan), maximizing existing extension workers, collaboration with Pertamina, handling chili pests.
