Abstract

ABSTRACT Problem Statement/Background (GAP): Generation Z (Gen Z) in Gunung Mas Regency represents a digitally connected demographic group with high exposure to social media. However, their level of political literacy remains underdeveloped in terms of critical engagement and active participation. Although social media provides broad access to political information, Gen Z's ability to filter credible information and engage meaningfully in political discourse is still limited. Purpose: This study aims to analyze how political literacy is shaped through social media among Gen Z in Gunung Mas Regency, Central Kalimantan Province. Method: The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using interviews with nine informants selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Informants include social media administrators from government institutions and representatives of Gen Z in the region. Result: The findings indicate that Gen Z has a fair understanding of local politics but remains passive in political conversations on social media. They prefer verified sources and demonstrate high awareness of fake news. Instagram and Facebook are the main platforms for political information. However, internet access limitations in several areas hinder the broader development of political literacy. Conclusion: Social media plays a significant role in shaping political literacy among Gen Z. Nevertheless, strengthening political and digital literacy programs is essential to foster a generation that is more politically active, critical, and empowered in the local democratic process. Keywords: political literacy, Gen Z, social media, political participation ABSTRAK Permasalahan/Latar Belakang (Gap): Generasi Z (Gen Z) di Kabupaten Gunung Mas merupakan kelompok usia produktif yang sangat terpapar media sosial, namun tingkat literasi politik mereka belum sepenuhnya berkembang secara aktif dan kritis. Meskipun media sosial menyediakan akses informasi politik yang luas, kemampuan Gen Z dalam menyaring informasi yang valid dan berpartisipasi secara aktif dalam diskusi politik masih rendah. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana literasi politik Gen Z terbentuk melalui media sosial di Kabupaten Gunung Mas Provinsi Kalimantan Tengah. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik wawancara terhadap sembilan informan yang dipilih melalui purposive dan snowball sampling, meliputi admin instansi pemerintahan dan perwakilan Gen Z di Kabupaten Gunung Mas. Hasil/Temuan: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Gen Z memiliki pemahaman politik lokal yang cukup baik, tetapi masih pasif dalam diskusi politik di media sosial. Mereka cenderung memilih informasi dari sumber terverifikasi dan memiliki kesadaran tinggi terhadap hoaks. Instagram dan Facebook menjadi platform utama penyebaran informasi politik. Namun, keterbatasan akses internet di beberapa wilayah menjadi penghambat utama. Kesimpulan: Media sosial berperan penting dalam membentuk literasi politik Gen Z, namun perlu adanya penguatan program literasi politik dan digital agar Gen Z mampu menjadi aktor politik yang lebih aktif, kritis, dan berdaya dalam proses demokrasi lokal.
