Abstract
ABSTRACT Problem Statement/Background (GAP): The political movement in Southeast Sulawesi Province has long used the archipelagic land system. This political practice provides an opportunity for candidates to carry their interests through a common identity. The practice of mainland islands in local political movements in the election of governor and deputy governor of Southeast Sulawesi in 2018 made the issue of ethnicity a carrier for the representation of candidates to attract the masses at the momentum of the 2018 Southeast Sulawesi Governor Election Since the reign of (late) La Ode Kaimuddin when he led as the 7th governor of Southeast Sulawesi in 1992, during that period he who incidentally is ethnic from the archipelago (Muna) has been looking for a political colleague who has the status of a Kendari city community who is of the Tolaki ethnicity. The existence of this island land application has led local elites to encourage identity politics. Purpose: This study aims to determine identity politics and what factors cause identity politics to be brought together with ethnic issues. Methods: The research method used is descriptive qualitative. In this study using the theory of identity politics from Pierre Van Den Bergh where there are two dimensions. The dimensions in question are constructionist and instrumentalist. Data collection techniques used are interviews, observation and documentation. Results/Findings: The results showed that during the Southeast Sulawesi gubernatorial election, there was an issue of ethnicity that was under and still carried out by parties that paired candidates from mainland and islands, this was done in order to attract the public to choose candidate pairs based on their ethnicity. The factors that cause identity politics to emerge are the power factor, the desire of the bearer to give birth to a candidate from the native son of the region, the instrument factor used in the form of social media to raise the issue of identity politics, but the tribal instrument is not so highlighted to avoid conflicts between communities. Conclusion: The identity of mainland and islands is often used for political purposes. In this case, ethnic identity is often constructed and instrumented according to the circumstances and goals of the political elite or winning team in election contestations to gain public support.
